How to add a wired child node to a Linksys Velop Intelligent Mesh WiFi system using the Linksys app

The Linksys Velop Intelligent Mesh nodes can be connected with ethernet cables. Wiring nodes together can increase the range and speed of your mesh system and reduce the risk of wireless interference.

You will still have to set up the additional nodes wirelessly using the Linksys app; once this is done, connect the nodes using CAT5e or higher-rated ethernet cables and the nodes should automatically switch to a wired connection.

Before you begin:

  • Parent node - The parent node is the Linksys Velop node/router that will be connected to your modem or internet source.
  • Child node - The child node is an additional Linksys Velop node/router that you can add to extend your WiFi network.
    • If you are adding a Linksys Velop Cognitive Mesh product, note that this is not backward compatible with Linksys Velop Intelligent Mesh products. Here is a list of child nodes that you can add instead.

Directions

2. If your child node isn’t connected wirelessly to your network, you will need to add the child node using the Linksys app.

3. Once the child node has been added to the mesh system, move the child node to your desired location then connect it to a power outlet.

4. Connect an ethernet cable to the child node and connect the other end of the cable to the parent node. The nodes will automatically switch to a wired connection.

For StarHub ISP, it is required to connect the child node from its WAN port to the LAN port of the parent node. This is for you to be able to stream with your StarHub Set-Top Box (TV+Box) via the child node.

For non-Starhub nodes and other nodes with multiple ports, you can connect either from the WAN or LAN port of the child node to a LAN port on the parent node.

5. If you have other nodes to add, repeat steps 2-3 but connect any additional child node to the upstream node instead of connecting it to the parent node.

You have now set up a wired mesh system. Keep in mind that the nodes do not provide power over ethernet (non-PoE). They need to be plugged into a power source. However, they can still work with your managed or unmanaged switches as part of your network setup.
