Learn how to set up the internet on your Linksys router using these common connection types:

  • Automatic Configuration – DHCP - Common for most ISP connections
  • PPPoE - If your ISP provided a username and password, usually used for Digital Subscribe Line (DSL) with a bridge modem
  • Static IP - If your ISP assigned specific IP settings

Automatic Configuration – DHCP

The default connection type used on Linksys routers. It automatically obtains an IP address, subnet mask, default gateway, and DNS details from your internet service provider (ISP) or modem, requiring no manual setup. This option is ideal for most dynamic IP connections.

1. Access the web UI.

Open a web browser and enter the default IP address ("192.168.1.1") or "myrouter.local" in the Address bar. Then, enter the router password (default is "admin"), and click Log in.

2. Go to Connectivity > Internet Settings.

Make sure that your Connection Type is set to Automatic Configuration - DHCP.

3. Enable MAC Address Clone (optional).

This step is typically unnecessary, but if your ISP uses a cable connection, you may need to enable MAC Address Clone. Simply click the Clone My PC's MAC button to replicate your computer's MAC address.

4. Click Apply to save the settings.

PPPoE

Point-to-Point Protocol over Ethernet (PPPoE) is an internet connection type commonly used by DSL providers. It requires a username and password provided by your ISP to establish a connection, enabling secure authentication and access to the internet.

1. Access the web UI.

Open a web browser and enter the default IP address ("192.168.1.1") or "myrouter.local" in the Address bar. Enter the router password (default is "admin"), then click Log in.

2. Go to Connectivity > Internet Settings.

Change your Connection Type to PPPoE.

3. Input the Username and Password provided by your ISP.

Some ISPs now require a VLAN ID for added protection. If your ISP requires this information, make sure you input the correct VLAN ID.

4. Click Apply to save the settings.

Static IP

Static IP is an internet connection type where your ISP assigns a fixed IP address that does not change. You must manually configure the router with the provided IP address, subnet mask, gateway, and DNS settings. This is often used for hosting servers or services requiring a consistent IP.

1. Access the web UI.

Open a web browser and enter the default IP address ("192.168.1.1") or "myrouter.local" in the address bar. Enter the router password (default is "admin"), then click Log in.

2. Go to Connectivity > Internet Settings.

Change your connection type to Static IP.

3. Input the IP settings provided by your ISP. See sample below.

4. Click Apply to save the settings.
